Grace Haven Orphanage, Pyin Oo Lwin
In 1998, a Lisu priest and her English husband built the Grace Haven Orphanage in Pyin Oo Lwin for children who are orphaned, from poor families, and from single parent families. Today, 80 boys and girls, both Christians and non-Christians, live at the Orphanage.
The Grace Haven Orphanage and ministry is under the umbrella of The Christian Lisu Church of Myanmar, a Baptist church. It is supported by small donations from parents, relatives, guardians, and some international private donors. The Orphanage provides education and education-related services to prepare the children to lead productive independent lives when they leave Grace Haven. These services include enrolling the children in the government school, providing private tutors, and giving professional skills training.
Most of the income is generated through pig breeding, rice growing, and vegetable farming. The revenue from a pig farm and the planting of rice and vegetable crops helps to support the children. Education and associated expenses, including school fees and uniforms, are financed through donations and farming.
Grace Haven Orphanage needs to expand its farming activities to produce enough food for the children. Fortunately, some Lisu parish members have donated four acres of agricultural land to the Grace Haven Orphanage. However, this land lacks water and it is unprotected from grazing animals and passers-by. To use this farming land productively the Orphanage needs solid fencing and a proper irrigation with a well and a water pump.
