Nationalities Children’s Orphanage
Since 1983, the Anglican Church, Diocese of Mandalay has provided education and accommodation to children and orphans from the Naga Hills in the northwest, one of the poorest and least developed areas of Myanmar.
The Nationalities Children’s Orphanage is located in the very center of Mandalay, at the western moat of the Mandalay Palace. In addition to orphans, the Anglican Church also accepts children from poor families as there is no proper school education available in their home villages. In the beginning, the orphans’ house accepted boys and girls in the only building but had to stop the mixed gender use on government request.
The poor condition of the building and the lack of expansion space at the Orphanage’s ground require a relocation of the house to a new site. The Anglican Bishop wants to relocate the Orphanage to Shwebo, about 80 miles to the northwest of Mandalay, on the other side of the Irrawaddy River. Here the Church owns a big property which would allow for vocational training activities, a playground and two buildings, one each for boys and girls. In addition, the boys would feel more at home in the rural environment rather than in the middle of Mandalay.
First, the Bishop wants to construct a house in Shwebo for the boys. In the second step, a home for orphan girls from the Naga Hills is envisioned.
