People In Need – Gerhard Baumgard Stiftung (“PIN”) was established as a charitable foundation in Germany in 2004. We support disadvantaged children and youth in Myanmar.

Background Information

Dr. Baumgard founded People In Need after having worked with Médecins Sans Frontières in Indonesia and Thailand. A review of the NGO landscape in South-East Asia and the amounts of international aid granted to individual Asian countries let us to focus on Myanmar. Compared to ASEAN countries such as Cambodia, Laos, and Vietnam, Myanmar (Burma) only received a miniscule fraction of international financial aid per capita while Myanmar lagged far behind in terms of educational standards, public health, infrastructure and per capita personal income.

When we started in 2004 all aspects of Myanmar life were tightly controlled by the military and Army Generals ran the government. As we wanted to work without governmental restrictions and military interference we did not register our foundation in Myanmar. Instead, we exclusively started projects with local non-governmental organizations at grassroots level. As Dr. Baumgard lived in Myanmar until 2010, PIN could build up a large and diverse network of Burmese volunteers in Christian Churches, Buddhist Monasteries, and local charitable foundations.

PIN’s projects are identified and vetted locally. Potential local partners present project proposals to PIN which we screen and evaluate carefully at the envisioned project locations. Once we decide to support a project, PIN and the local partners will agree on implementation, management and operation of the project. All our projects are evaluated and monitored continuously by our local partners and by PIN’s management who will visit project sites frequently.

Dr. Gerhard Baumgard, Founder & Director

Dr. Baumgard holds a Ph.D. in economics. He retired from international banking in 2002. After working as a volunteer for Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) in Indonesia and Thailand, he established People In Need to help disadvantaged youth in South-East Asia, with a special focus on Myanmar.
